1121 vs 1509 Basmati Rice — Which Should You Import?
1121 and 1509 are the two most exported Basmati rice varieties from India. Both are long-grain, aromatic Basmati — but they differ in grain length, price, yield, and market preference. If you are sourcing Basmati for your market and trying to decide between the two, this comparison will help you make the right choice for your customers and your margins.
Origin and Background
1121 Basmati was developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in 2003 and quickly became the dominant export variety because of its extraordinary grain length — the longest of any commercially cultivated Basmati. It is grown primarily in Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.
1509 is a newer cross-bred variety developed for higher field yield while maintaining long-grain Basmati characteristics. It was commercialised around 2013 and has gained significant market share because it offers respectable grain length at a lower cost to farmers and buyers.
Grain Length — The Key Difference
1121 averages 7.8–8.2mm raw and can reach 20–22mm when cooked — among the longest rice grains in the world. This exceptional elongation is the primary reason 1121 commands a premium.
1509 averages 7.5–7.8mm raw and typically elongates to 16–18mm cooked. Still an excellent long-grain rice, but the visible difference at 1121's premium length is noticeable in side-by-side comparison.
For premium retail buyers, restaurants, and markets where long grain is a quality signal, 1121 is the specification. For volume buyers where value-for-money matters more than maximum grain length, 1509 is the practical choice.
Price Difference
1121 typically commands a 5–15% premium over 1509 at FOB level, depending on crop season and market conditions. The premium reflects the lower field yield of 1121 (farmers get less grain per acre) and the stronger market demand for the longer grain.
For a buyer importing a container per month, the cost difference can be significant over a year. Many importers carry both grades — 1121 for premium lines and 1509 for everyday or economy lines — maximising their margin mix.
Aroma and Cooking Performance
Both varieties have the characteristic Basmati aroma (2-acetyl-1-pyrroline compound), though 1121 is generally considered more intensely fragrant. Side-by-side taste tests by food professionals typically rate 1121 slightly higher for aroma, though the difference is subtle to most consumers.
Cooking performance is similar — both varieties produce fluffy, well-separated grains when cooked correctly. 1121 holds its shape marginally better due to the higher amylose content associated with extra-long grain varieties. 1509 cooks slightly faster and is marginally more forgiving of slight overcooking.
Which Markets Prefer Which?
Europe (UK, Netherlands, Germany, France): Both grades are traded, but premium retail buyers specify 1121. Food service and volume importers often prefer 1509 for cost efficiency.
Gulf and Middle East (Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait): 1121 is the prestige specification for premium retail and hotel supply. 1509 is widely used for mid-market retail and catering.
South Asian diaspora markets (UK, Canada, Australia): Strong preference for 1121, particularly the 1121 Steam form, due to cultural familiarity with the long-grain standard.
Both 1121 and 1509 are excellent Basmati varieties with distinct strengths. If your market values maximum grain length and is willing to pay a small premium, 1121 is your specification. If you need volume at a competitive price without sacrificing the Basmati character, 1509 delivers strong value. BABJEEXPORTS exports both varieties in Steam, Sella, and Golden Sella forms from our BRC-certified Karnal facility — pesticide-free, EU-compliant, with full lab documentation.
